How do I stop taking Xanax?

I was given Xanax for an anxiety issue I was having last year. My brother and grandfather was going through cancer treatment and I was having health concerns myself. My doc prescribed .5 mg of Xanax three times a day. I broke the tablets in half because I was so sensitive to it. It helped though. I gradually had to take a whole tablet for the same effect. Now I’m on 1 mg and literally FEEL my body asking for it daily. I get nervous and tense. I can’t sleep without it. I don’t like being dependent on it. I never wanted this to happen but I fear I’m addicted to it. Now I’ve got blurred vision as well and that is really getting annoying. I don’t want to talk to my doc about it because I don’t want him to see me as some junkie with a problem. I want to at least seem like I’m in ocntrol even if I’m not. Is there any step down medication to wean off this stuff before it gets worse? Holistic or otherwise?

There is no reason not to go to your Dr and tell him what the medication is doing to you. He prescribed it for you and he needs to take you off gradually. There is no reason he would think you are a junkie, especially since you want off it. Don’t try to take yourself off. Xanax is very addictive and he should have given you something that was not. Do not ask him for a different medication to wean off of Xanax. He will know what to do to get you off it. Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed, just tell him you want off of it.
