Complementary Medicine and Health Psychology $36.68 This book, aimed at postgraduates and healthcare professionals and academics, is the first ever work to apply health psychology to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in a systematic and open-minded fashion. The authors, all health psychologists with considerable experience in the field, take an objective view of the nature of CAM, explaining the often semi-mystical background to some CAM approaches, and identifying where psychology can help to answer some crucial questions, such as why CAM sometimes appears to work, why sometimes it does not, and why some people are drawn to it and others not. In the nine chapters, the authors deal with contemporary meanings of health and illness and the differences and similarities between orthodox and complementary approaches to health, models of the person, health beliefs and experimental psychology, placebo, research methods in CAM, stress, coping and stress management, pain, chronic illness, communications and interactions between client and therapist, and the future for CAM and health psychology. CAM approaches are often dismissed out of hand by scientist-practitioners, but psychologists should, arguably, take a more sympathetic stance, since the psychological professions ought to be keen to understand why CAM is so popular, in its various cultural forms around the world, regardless of its actual efficacy as demonstrated by the research so far conducted. The authors argue that as a human phenomenon alone, CAM is undeniably important. |

Complementary and Alternative Medicine $100.37 The use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is on the rise globally. Practices may incorporate or base themselves on traditional medicine, folk knowledge, spiritual beliefs, or newly conceived approaches to healing. CAM is attractive because it is perceived as natural and hence safe, it promotes wellness and not just treatment of illness, and is provided by practitioners who give individualized attention to their patients. This work was carried out with the objective of describing the use of CAM for healthcare needs. The study design was cross sectional descriptive. Ayurveda was the most frequently used CAM system. Also it has been found that people use CAM for a wide range of health problems chiefly digestive problems. It has been noted that people mostly prefer it to use at first. There seems a strong need for exploring the role of CAM in health and disease. Faith in the CAM practitioners seems to be one of the reasons for people using it. Hence, it is recommended that the results and benefits that the CAM practitioners are achieving need to be explored in a scientific way. Reporting Complementary and Alternative Medicine $95.59 This longitudinal study gave an overview of the 47 year coverage of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in a news magazine Time and a popular science magazine Scientific American through a content analysis. It found the coverage in both magazines increased over the time period and shared some similarities in topic selection and types of CAM covered, depicting the path for the prevalence of these nonconventional therapies in the United States. However, only the coverage in Time was consistent with the prediction of the diffusion of innovation theory. The two magazines were also different in framing these therapies due to their discrete readerships. Time focused more on the social connotations of the subject, while Scientific American showed more interest in the research value of these therapies. Time included more varied sources, while Scientific American relied heavily on academicians. Finally, the study attempted to establish an agendasetting relationship between the two magazines and five top medical journals in their CAM coverage but failed to find statistical significance.
