Driving Phobia-ways to help?

Hey there guys, my Mum experienced a car crash a couple of years ago. she was badly shook up, and now and again she has a phobia of driving, she has a chocking of the throat sensation when she drives and she also can get quite giddy in the head, and can find it difficult to focus. Can anyone recommend any ideas. Maybe self self hypnosis or guided meditation to help her though this. Any ideas are welcome.

It’s basically taking baby steps and working up towards driving. Before consulting a behavioral or cognitive-behavioral therapist to help her, it would be helpful for your mother to already start thinking about how generalized this fear has become. She may feel a little anxious just by looking at a car, or just by thinking about driving.

It’s possible to do this on one’s own, but it can be difficult. And if we push ourselves too hard to overcome our fears sometimes our fears only get worse. If for example your mother decides to keep pushing herself to drive even though she’s really anxious, her anxiety could actually cause an accident – and that would only strengthen her fear of driving. So I think it would be best for her to consult a professional who can help her develop relaxation techniques and guide her through gradual exposure to the source of her fear.
