$39.95

DESCRIPTION: This encyclopedia is among the latest additions to the rapidly growing collection of consumer health books on alternative medicine. But as the full title indicates, this well-illustrated work is not a compendium of unusual remedies but rather a resource about an approach that combines both conventional and alternative practices, a method often termed “integrative medicine.” With contributions from a team of health-care professionals, mostly from the Center for Integrative Medicine at Duke University, the encyclopedia starts with brief but helpful preliminary chapters describing the integrative-medicine approach. Following this, part 1 includes 15 anatomically or systemically organized chapters (for example, “Eyes”, “Respiratory System”), each containing 8 to 23 articles on individual health conditions. Articles are concise, and each includes a description of the condition, its causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatments from both conventional and nonconventional perspectives. Part 2 consists of six chapters (for example, “The Natural World”, “Energy Therapy”), each with 8 to 16 articles describing specific alternative therapies. Here the reader learns about well-known practices, like acupuncture, and some exotic ones, like chakra balancing, all associated with the “Scale of Evidence,” a tool for assessing safety and effectiveness. Increasingly the trend in health care is away from a disease-oriented, physician and technology centered model toward a wellness-oriented, patient centered approach that combines alternative healing therapies with conventional medicine. Nowhere is this holistic philosophy of healing practiced at a higher level than at the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine (DCIM). This medical reference, with hundreds of full-color images, is the most authoritative and comprehensive ever published on integrative care. “The Duke Encyclopedia of New Medicine: Conventional and Alternative Medicine for All Ages” by The Duke Center for Integrative Medicine, et al. – 640 page Hardcover

Alternative Medicine and Ethics

Alternative Medicine and Ethics

$111.44

Leading bioethicists and philosophers examine and debate the question of how the health care system should deal with using complimentary and alternative medicines. The distinguished authorities writing here both defend and criticize alternative medicine, with some arguing that the medical system should change substantially in order to accommodate alternative medicine, and others claiming that virtually all alternative treatments are worthless. In the heat of the debate many fundamental issues are raised concerning our health care system, among them the questions of therapeutic effectiveness, media truthfulness, the patients freedom to choose among treatment options, health insurance coverage, the ability of the current healthcare delivery system to meet patients needs, and government approval of alternative medicines. Complementary and Alternative Medicine

The use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is on the rise globally. Practices may incorporate or base themselves on traditional medicine, folk knowledge, spiritual beliefs, or newly conceived approaches to healing. CAM is attractive because it is perceived as natural and hence safe, it promotes wellness and not just treatment of illness, and is provided by practitioners who give individualized attention to their patients. This work was carried out with the objective of describing the use of CAM for healthcare needs. The study design was cross sectional descriptive. Ayurveda was the most frequently used CAM system. Also it has been found that people use CAM for a wide range of health problems chiefly digestive problems. It has been noted that people mostly prefer it to use at first. There seems a strong need for exploring the role of CAM in health and disease. Faith in the CAM practitioners seems to be one of the reasons for people using it. Hence, it is recommended that the results and benefits that the CAM practitioners are achieving need to be explored in a scientific way. Reporting Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Reporting Complementary and Alternative Medicine

This longitudinal study gave an overview of the 47 year coverage of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in a news magazine Time and a popular science magazine Scientific American through a content analysis. It found the coverage in both magazines increased over the time period and shared some similarities in topic selection and types of CAM covered, depicting the path for the prevalence of these nonconventional therapies in the United States. However, only the coverage in Time was consistent with the prediction of the diffusion of innovation theory. The two magazines were also different in framing these therapies due to their discrete readerships. Time focused more on the social connotations of the subject, while Scientific American showed more interest in the research value of these therapies. Time included more varied sources, while Scientific American relied heavily on academicians. Finally, the study attempted to establish an agendasetting relationship between the two magazines and five top medical journals in their CAM coverage but failed to find statistical significance.
