Curriculum and Assessment $221.29 Curriculum and Assessment is the first volume of a new series International Perspectives on Curriculum. This edited book examines the relationship between curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, and, as with subsequent volumes, adopts a crosssector and comparative approach. Contributors make reference to a number of important debates in the fields of curriculum and assessment: summative versus formative assessment; differentiation versus inclusion; psychometric versus holistic theorising; decontextualised versus contextualised assessment; symbolprocessing versus situated learning approaches; integrated versus connected assessment; and high stakes versus low stakes assessment. The rationale for this volume is not to reach an agreement about assessment and curriculum frameworks, but to air the various debates referred to above and develop new frameworks for understanding these important issues. This volume and the series is timely as administrators and policymakers in different parts of the world have taken an increased interest in education, and as moves to centralise curriculum provision have gathered pace. This has in some cases driven a wedge between curriculum theory and curriculum practice, as policymakers have developed and implemented proposals without referring to academic debates about these issues. It therefore is an important task to reassert the need to discuss and debate the curriculum in a critical manner before implementation occurs. This volume sets about that task, addressing policymakers, administrators, teachers and the research community. Author: Scott, David/ Scott, David Series Title: International Perspectives on Curriculum Studies, Binding Type: Hardcover Number of Pages: 200 Publication Date: 2000/12/30 Language: English Dimensions: 9.56 x 6.42 x 0.76 inches |

Continuous Assessment in the Language Classroom $114.71 The search for improved evaluation methods at South African schools necessitates study of teacher assessment versus examination assessment. Student performance proved worst under an examination only, yet improved when combined with other forms of evaluation enabling integration of holistic continuous assessment (CA) introduced in 1996. This study investigated its implementation and effects in the English classroom. CA allowed students to be assessed through the year for 50 of their grade. With 50 from examinations, this final score determined promotion. The study reviewed language performance of 612 students over 4 years. Scores for 1992/3 (exams only; before CA) and 1997/8 (exams and CA) were compared, as well as the impact of gender, ethnicity and language proficiency against the backdrop of the changing milieu a developing democracy, new education laws, a multicultural society, violence on the school campus, demoralised teachers and inadequate resources to implement change. Measurement and Assessment of Survey Quality $181.62 Most of the guidelines and methods available to measure and assess survey quality are based on qualitative descriptions. In practice, they are difficult to implement. Hence there is a demand to develop a quantitative tool to effectively measure and assess survey quality. The tool developed in this book enables survey researchers and/or commissioners to make a holistic assessment of the value of the particular survey(s). It is an Excel based audit following all stages of the survey from inception, to design, construction, execution, analysis and dissemination. At each stage a set of criteria are applied to assess quality. Scores attained against these assessments are weighted by the importance of the criteria and summed to give an overall assessment of the stage. The total score for a survey can be obtained by the combination of the scores for every stage weighted again by the importance of each stage. The advantage of this tool is to construct a means of survey assessment which can be used in a diagnostic manner to evaluate and improve survey quality. The target audience of this book may comprise students, scholars, practitioners and researchers. A History of Holistic Literacy: Five Major Educators $165.95 As one of the few books on the history and philosophy of American elementary school education, Cavanaughs work examines the pioneering careers of Francis Wayland Parker, John Dewey, Rudolph Steiner, Hughes Mearns, and Laura Zirbes. Finding the basic framework for current fashionable trends in education like the Whole Language and Process Writing Movement, Cavanaugh shows how educators came to these ideas over 100 years ago. After presenting the five biographies, Cavanaugh goes on to explain how children learn to read and write; what kinds of schools foster this learning; the roles of teachers, students, and parents; and the important tools of grading, evaluation, and assessment. Assessment $92.4 Educational assessment is the process of documenting, usually in measurable terms, knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs. Assessment can focus on the individual learner, the learning community, the institution, or the educational system as a whole. According to the Academic Exchange Quarterly Studies of a theoretical or empirical nature addressing the assessment of learner aptitude and preparation, motivation and learning styles, learning outcomes in achievement and satisfaction in different educational contexts are all welcome, as are studies addressing issues of measurable standards and benchmarks It is important to notice that the final purposes and assessment practices in education depends on the theoretical framework of the practitioners and researchers, their assumptions and beliefs about the nature of human mind, the origin of knowledge and the process of learning. The following table summarizes the main theoretical frameworks behind almost all the theoretical and research work, and the instructional practices in education. This different frameworks have given rise to interesting debates among scholars.
