Russet potatoes vs. Brown rice in cat food?
For those well versed in holistic diets:
Holistic Blend has brown rice as the 2nd ingredient (www.holisticblend.com). Orijen has russet potato as the 4th ingredient (http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/orijen/). This is why I switched my cat from Holistic Blend to Orijen. After about two weeks, he’s now on a 50/50 mix and I’ve noticed he has visible dander which I’ve never seen on him before. The biggest difference between the two foods are the brown rice vs. potato. Could there be a link or is it more likely it’s because it’s dry in the house since it’s winter.
He’s 4 years old.
I’d like to stick to a Canadian brand of food (not entirely neccessary) and will not purchase from a company that uses anything other than free-range human grade meat (no exceptions).

Cats are obligate carnivores — their systems are designed for meat only. It’s not a question of what starches are best for a cat, but which ones are least harmful. Rice is a bit easier for them to digest. (Not part of your question, really, but corn is the worst.) If your cat isn’t reacting well to potato, it could develop dander.
The dry air could be a factor as well – do you have a humidifier in your house?
