Are there any holistic or home remedies for depression in cats?

My cat is majorly depressed, and it is affecting his health. He is almost 13 years old, and about a year ago, he lost his “little sister,” my 11 year old cat who was with him from kittenhood. Since then, we have also moved house several times, and in an attempt to cheer him up and provide company, I brought in two kittens. He goes back and forth with the kittens (they’ve been together since May now), sometimes being loving and other times biting at them and smacking. He has also suffered his first health problems of his life, but he should be feeling better by now. He has developed feline acne that we have treated with all kinds of washes and antibiotic creams, and it won’t go away. When I looked up possible causes, stress was mentioned as a factor.

Cats abhor change and I’m sure the moves didn’t help. The kittens were probably also a source of stress. I think you were right that he needed a new companion, but this should have been done slowly after he was accustomed to his new home, and I would have suggested a cat around his age who had lived with other cats in the past. But that’s all done now and I’m sure he’ll grow accustomed to the kittens and all these changes. It will just take time.

The book “Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat–Not a Sour Puss” by Pam Johnson-Bennett covers pretty much everything that you could ever think of. If you don’t want to buy it you could always peruse it in a bookstore and flip to the appropriate sections. If you can get ahold of a cat behaviorist I’m sure they could help. Vets know a lot more about physical than mental problems.

Try to keep from changing anything else on him. Even a new brand of cat food could further stress him out. Give him plenty of space if he wants it; if he wants to hide under the bed, let him. He will come out eventually. Try pulling out a feathered “fishing-pole” toy once or twice a day and play with him away from the kittens. Just like with people, cats get stressed more easily without exercise. Give him a treat after you finish playing with him.

I’m sure he was very attached to your poor other cat, and nobody would expect someone to get over the death of a loved one in a few months. Keep giving him space, stability and love and I think he will be OK eventually.
