Id i take a job at a yoga centre in US, how can i supplement low income by practicing massage on a j1 VISA ?
I am planning to move to California this summer to work in a meditation/yoga centre. I’ll be there on a J1 visa.
Whilst I work, I will be studying part time at a local college taking a course in Holistic Health.
The income from the Yoga Centre is relatively low. But i’d be happy to go there and learn from the experience if I knew I was able to supplement my income by practicing massage.
The School at which I am taking the course has a Wellbeing clinic, as does the meditation/yoga centre. They both say i they will be happy for me to work in the clinics in addition to the Trainee position in the Centre. I would charge $18 per hour for the massage service, and therefore could be financially secure.
Will it be possible for me to get a permit from the state police department to practice massage (given I have the proper qualifications) under a J1 visa ?
Additionally, do I need to show that I have a minimum amount of funds to obtain a J1 visa ? If so, how much ?

Unless the extra masssage giving is a part of the J-1 program, it does not appear that you would be authorized to give massages to earn extra income. What kind of exchange visitor program will you be in? Is it a Summer Work/Travel program? A Non-degree Students program? International Visitor?
Knowning which category of Exchange Visitors Program you are in would help in answering your question.
a. An exchange visitor may receive compensation from the program sponsor, or the sponsor’s appropriate designee, for employment when such activities are part of the exchange visitor’s program.
b. An exchange visitor who engages in unauthorized employment shall be deemed to be in violation of his or her program status and is subject to termination as a participant of an exchange visitor program.
