Is it worth paying the money to have a doula or midwife work with your doctor on your pregnancy and childbirth

I have always loved holistic care and complementary medicine. I would love to have a midwife or doula work with me on my pregnancy as well. I want to give birth at a hospital and still be under a traditional medical doctors care, but I would also like the complementary care and guidance a doula or midwife could provide. I dont want to do this 100% naturally. I have a low pain threshold and if Im feeling the need for it at a point in the labor, I do want the option of pain management. But I would like to have, the best of both world really. there are very few midwife and doula services in the town I live in and they can run over $1500 dollars for their services. Not sure if that is average or not. Being that a new baby is coming into our lives and we need to save money, and watch our budget, is it worth spending that kind of money on this? I have also heard of women having their mom or a close friend train to be their doula during their pregnancy.

You know, I think the more flexible and laid-back you are going into labor, the better off things work out. It seems like all of the people I know who have the best laid plans end up getting c-sections. I just said screw it. I watched a bunch of birthing videos online to prepare and didn’t even bother going to a class. And since the whole birth ended up happening in less than 3 hours from start to finish, I am so glad I didn’t waste the time and money on extra things.

I would say pick a friend to be your “relaxation manager” and get some aromatherapy stuff and meditation CDs in advance. It seems like doulas and midwives are most often used to support a non-medicated birth, so I doubt you will need someone who costs that much if you are just wanting some complementary treatments instead of a replacement for a doctor.

I think letting a friend do it would be a really great gift to your pal, and you could save a lot of money.
