Gradually switching dog food brands per vet’s recommendation…Solid Gold brand?

She wants me to get my overweight dog on a holistic/natural brand. She gave me a list of a few that she uses personally, and I am leaning toward the Solid Gold brand. Hercules is 2 1/2 years old, 98 pounds, and is on anti-seizure medication. The phenobarbital & potassium bromide has greatly increased his weight. X-rays shows early hip displasia & possible arthritis. I’ll be looking into supplements as well, as my vet consulted with me about what’s right for my big guy.

I recommend Solid Gold as well. My experience is with their Wolf Cub brand. My puppy seemed to really enjoy the taste and the ingredients were great. Of all their lines the one I like the best is Barking at the Moon, the high protein will lead to lean muscle mass. The one I would recommend the least is Holistique Blendz Adult Dog (fish). It is still a quality food in that the ingredients are wholesome, but it has very low meat content and all those grains are just going to add the his weight problem. I just wanted to mention, however, that switching to a high quality food from a more commercial brand can lead to digestive upset for a while. My advice is to go veeeerrrrry slow and stick with it. Give it at least 4-6 weeks for his digestive track to get used to it.

Other great brands that I recommend are Orijen (which we use currently), The Honest Kitchen, the Natura brands (EVO, Innova, Karma), Nature’s Variety, Taste of the Wild and Canidae.
