Get Your Z’s Homeopathy Meets Insomnia
Homeopathy is the medicine of good health. It is used for a myriad of illnesses and is especially valuable for insomnia. Homeopathy doesn’t employ drugs of commerce that cause side effects often worse that the original illness. Instead, the remedies are safe and effective.
Take Gina, for example. Gina is a 30 year old teacher. For as long as she can remember, she’s been loaded with energy. Others have even commented. However, in the last few years, her energy has waned so that she recently wondered if she had chronic fatigue. She also has not been able to fall asleep at night. Sometimes she could fall asleep but awoke at 3-4:00AM. This made her irritable and impatient with her students and even strangers when driving. She found that the slowness of other drivers was bothering her way too much. Additionally, she’d also been suffering constipation that was painful .
Gina recalls that her colleague in the art department had phoned a homeopath for her migraines. It had resulted in a complete reversal of her symptoms. She thought it was worth a try and called her.
The homeopath explained to Gina that her problems were all related and as one issue disappeared with the use of the correct homeopathic remedy, all of them would likely recede, as well. The remedy Gina took was Nux vomica and she took it every other week over a 6 week period of time.
At first, Gina felt extra tired at work. That first Saturday after taking the remedy, she took a three hour nap, but for the first time she felt refreshed by sleep. Then, later in the week, her insomnia completely abated. The following several days, she noted that normal bowel function was restored. But, most remarkable of all was when she realized that the anger was gone. “I mean really gone,” she emphasized when explaining this to her sister. In fact, she was looking forward to a road trip they were planning. Instead of irritability, Gina was experiencing a new desire to become a little more creative. She had for some time wanted to write an article for the local paper about a project she was involved with at school. She took this undertaking on with ease. The more she thought about it, the more significant the changes appeared to be.
In the world of homeopathy with its proven laws of health, it works to stimulate the person’s ability to resolve the illness with a gentle stimulus from the remedy. Instead of slamming the sufferer with a new, more potent illness as a result of the side effects of drugs, homeopathic remedies gently nudge the sufferer’s ability to resolve the pathology on her own.
Over a period of six weeks, Gina felt balanced and repaired. No side effects, no covering up of symptoms, no postponement of the issues. Just back to normal. “Now this is medicine of a different sort”, thought Gina. Homeopathy. Medicine of integrity and promise. Gina’s only regret was that she waited so long to incorporate it into her life.

Copeland’s Cure: Homeopathy and the War Between Conventional and Alternative Medicine by Natalie Robins – 352 Pages, Hardcover $24.95 Today, one out of every three Americans uses some form of alternative medicine, either along with their conventional (?standard,? ?traditional?) medications or in place of them. One of the most controversial?as well as one of the most popular?alternatives is homeopathy, a wholly Western invention brought to America from Germany in 1827, nearly forty years before the discovery that germs cause disease. Homeopathy is a therapy that uses minute doses of natural substances?minerals, such as mercury or phosphorus; various plants, mushrooms, or bark; and insect, shellfish, and other animal products, such as Oscillococcinum. These remedies mimic the symptoms of the sick person and are said to bring about relief by ?entering? the body?s ?vital force.? Many homeopaths believe that the greater the dilution, the greater the medical benefit, even though often not a single molecule of the original substance remains in the solution. In Copeland?s Cure, Natalie Robins tells the fascinating story of homeopathy in this country; how it came to be accepted because of the gentleness of its approach?Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow were outspoken advocates, as were Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Daniel Webster. We find out about the unusual war between alternative and conventional medicine that began in 1847, after the AMA banned homeopaths from membership even though their medical training was identical to that of doctors practicing traditional medicine. We learn how homeopaths were increasingly considered not to be ?real? doctors, and how ?real? doctors risked expulsion from the AMA if they even consulted with a homeopath. At the center of Copeland’s Cure is Royal Samuel Copeland, the now-forgotten maverick senator from New York who served from 1923 to 1938. Copeland was a student of both conventional and homeopathic medicine, an eye surgeon who became president of the American Institute of Homeopathy, dean of the New York Homeopathic Medical College, and health commissioner of New York City from 1918 to 1923 (he instituted unique approaches to the deadly flu pandemic). We see how Copeland straddled the worlds of politics (he befriended Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, among others) and medicine (as senator, he helped get rid of medical ?diploma mills?). His crowning achievement was to give homeopathy lasting legitimacy by including all its remedies in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938.Finally, the author brings the story of clashing medical beliefs into the present, and describes the role of homeopathy today and how some of its practitioners are now adhering to the strictest standards of scientific research?controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical studies. About Natalie Robins Natalie Robins is the author of eight books, including Savage Grace (cowritten with Steven M. L. Aronson), for which she received the Edgar Allan Poe Award; Alien Ink: The FBI?s War on Freedom of Expressio |
