Integrative Holistic Medicine

integrative holistic medicine
Are the terms Holistic Health and Integrative Medicine interchangable?

I have done some research and the ideologies behind the two terms seem to be very similar…i was wondering if the two are one in the same. Or if they are different, what are the differences?

Integrative medicine tends to mean a type of practice that incorporates the best of “conventional” medicine, and the best of “alternative” medicine.

Holistic health is a far more abstract terms that can be used by either conventional medical doctors, or alternative health care providers. As an example, a conventional cardiologist who refers patients out to work with a dietitian, an exercise physiologist, to attend to the body, and a meditation class or psychologist to deal with stress would be an example of a “holistic” MD…..

There is a lot of confusion regarding the language used to define such things, in part because the “borders” of what define those things are changing.

DESCRIPTION: This encyclopedia is among the latest additions to the rapidly growing collection of consumer health books on alternative medicine. But as the full title indicates, this well-illustrated work is not a compendium of unusual remedies but rather a resource about an approach that combines both conventional and alternative practices, a method often termed “integrative medicine.” With contributions from a team of health-care professionals, mostly from the Center for Integrative Medicine at Duke University, the encyclopedia starts with brief but helpful preliminary chapters describing the integrative-medicine approach. Following this, part 1 includes 15 anatomically or systemically organized chapters (for example, “Eyes”, “Respiratory System”), each containing 8 to 23 articles on individual health conditions. Articles are concise, and each includes a description of the condition, its causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatments from both conventional and nonconventional perspectives. Part 2 consists of six chapters (for example, “The Natural World”, “Energy Therapy”), each with 8 to 16 articles describing specific alternative therapies. Here the reader learns about well-known practices, like acupuncture, and some exotic ones, like chakra balancing, all associated with the “Scale of Evidence,” a tool for assessing safety and effectiveness. Increasingly the trend in health care is away from a disease-oriented, physician and technology centered model toward a wellness-oriented, patient centered approach that combines alternative healing therapies with conventional medicine. Nowhere is this holistic philosophy of healing practiced at a higher level than at the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine (DCIM). This medical reference, with hundreds of full-color images, is the most authoritative and comprehensive ever published on integrative care. “The Duke Encyclopedia of New Medicine: Conventional and Alternative Medicine for All Ages” by The Duke Center for Integrative Medicine, et al. – 640 page Hardcover

Inroads to an Integrative Medicine

Inroads to an Integrative Medicine

$143.39

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used as an adjunct to, or integrated with western medicine is a new trend in the U.S. that registered nurses are increasingly using. Since many people seek the advice of nurses, it is important to understand how they decide to try TCM, and integrate their new knowledge and experience into their nursing identity, and practice. Identifying how nurses adopt, use, and discuss TCM demonstrates the important role nurses have in influencing dissemination of TCM within the U.S. population. While some research exists detailing nurses use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) of which TCM is one, none focuses exclusively on nurses TCM use. This book presents results of a qualitative case study undertaken in Minnesota to explore these nursing issues. Results will be of interest to those curious about expanding TCM use in western cultures and to nurses who seek to integrate TCM into the nursing assessment and triage process. Symbolic interactionists will find the application of some of George Herbert Mead and Erving Goffmans sociological concepts to nursing practice of integrative medicine.
