Meditation Groups

Should I start my own Zen Meditation group?
I don’t like any of the Buddhist Centers or groups in town. Do you think its ok to start one. I won’t teaching – merely just a group of like-minded people together for Zazen.
You can certainly start your own meditation group, without authorization of any teacher or tradition.
However, unless you’re an authorized Zen teacher or priest, you might refrain from calling it a Zen group – that term sets up expectations that you can’t meet.
Forgive me for commenting on your first sentence . . . but I’m concerned about your aversion to the existing groups in your town.
When we follow our likes and dislikes, we inevitably leave the path of truth and wisdom, and fall into the weeds. The mind that discriminates is the same mind that creates suffering.
Seng-t’san, the Third Zen Ancestor, wrote:
“The Great Way is not difficult,
Just avoid picking and choosing.
When like and dislike disappear,
The truth appears clear and undisguised.”
The fact that you don’t “like” any of the groups in your community tells you something important about yourself, but almost nothing about the qualities of those groups. You might take this opportunity to look a little more deeply into your like/dislike mind.
Best wishes on your path!
