Metaphysics Of Science

metaphysics of science
Accourding to Kant, is a science of metaphysics possible? Why of why not?

This is in the book “prolegomena to any future metaphysics” by Immanuel Kant

Kant’s endeavor is to save metaphysics by regulating the way we inquire into it. He believes metaphysics can be achieved, as long as we remain modest about our metaphysical conclusions and restrain ourselves to things which can be inquired empirically and logically.
The whole point of practical reason is to solve metaphysical questions. By putting thesis and antithesis side by side, Kant shows you can come up with a perfectly rational argument for either side of questions such as does God exist? Was the Universe created? Does time have a beginning, etc…
He therefore chooses one of the answers based on a certain view of morality. We should believe God exists because God justified morality and we need morality.
The idea is that you don’t pretend you can prove this belief rationally.
Personally, I think there’s not much substance to it. If Kant had been less obsessed with proving things, his whole life’s work could have been summarized as: I am an empiricist with opinions on morality. I think he’s way overrated.

What the Bleep!? – Down the Rabbit Hole (QUANTUM Three-Disc Special Edition)

The unlikeliest cult hit of 2004 was What the (Bleep) Do We Know?, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory…

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that investigates principles of reality transcending those of any particular science. Cosmology and ontology are traditional branches of metaphysics. It is concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world.Someone who studies metaphysics would be called either a metaphysician or a metaphysicist. The prefix meta ( beyond ) was attached to the chapters in Aristotles work that physically followed after the chapters on physics, in posthumously edited collections. Aristotle himself did not call these works Metaphysics. Aristotle called some of the subjects treated there first philosophy. A central branch of metaphysics is ontology, the investigation into what types of things there are in the world and what relations these things bear to one another. The metaphysician also attempts to clarify the notions by which people understand the world, including existence, objecthood, property, space, time, causality, and possibility. Fictionalism in Metaphysics

Fictionalism in Metaphysics

$83.77

Fictionalism is the view that a serious intellectual inquiry need not aim at truth. Since 1980, fictionalist accounts of science, mathematics, morality, and other domains of inquiry have been developed. In metaphysics fictionalism is now widely regarded as an option worthy of serious consideration. This volume represents a major benchmark in the debate: it brings together an impressive international team of contributors, whose essays (all but one of them appearing here for the first time) represent the state of the art in various areas of metaphysical controversy, relating to language, mathematics, modality, truth, belief, ontology, and morality.
