any one abl to explain it in laymens terms first, and also a bit more in depth please? would be appreciated as i find meditation interesting.

Meditation systems are either based on active or passive meditation. What you call “mindfulness meditation”, contrary to the literal wording, ironically falls under passive meditation since it focuses on “observing” which is passive. The difference is active meditation seeks to overload the mind with concepts for developing them further and some more specificly aimed at elevating the soul such as the doctrines of Abraham Abulafia for obtainment of prophecy. Then there is passive meditation which focuses on clearing the mind and detachment from “self” for understanding ourselves, solving problems, developing our interests, listening to our body and observing everything at a bird’s eye which grant mental equilibrium. For more benefits, research the term Nirvana. Many religions teach both styles of meditation just initiatives are first taught passive since active is based highly on myriads of concepts picked up over the years and intention and application differ.
