schools for metaphysics?
I am interesting in studying metaphysics, but I don’t know of any schools..
I have looked into the University of Metaphysical Sciences, and it seems to lack actual accreditation. I am very wary of distance learning for a topic such as this. Has anyone even heard of a legitimate school for metaphysics, or am I better off studying it on my own time without earning credit?
Also: Does anyone know of any good books I should read on metaphysical things?
thanks
I’m sure there is an accredited school out there somewhere – and if that is what you desire spend some time online searching for one. To begin your own research, you might consider narrowing your focus to a specific area of metaphysics. Then start reading what you can find at your local library, online, and at a local new age bookstore.

Metaphysics: A Study in First Principles $39.22 1882. Bowne writes: Philosophy, as a special form of mental activity, seeks to answer these two questions: How is knowledge possible? What is the true nature of reality? The first question deals with the knowing subject and his relation to the object. The aim is to give an exposition and a theory of the knowing process and to unfold its implications. The second question deals with the nature of the object viewed as a thing in itself. The first question belongs to the theory of knowledge; the second belongs to metaphysics. The work is divided into three parts, whose titles are strongly suggestive of the ancient scholastic treatises on metaphysics. Ontology, or existence in general; cosmology, or cosmical existence and processes; and psychology, or psychical existence and processes, are the divisions which reflection upon experience immediately suggests. Author: Bowne, Borden Parker Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 436 Publication Date: 2004/07/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.97 inches |

Powers: A Study in Metaphysics $67 George Molnar came to see that the solution to a number of the problems of contemporary philosophy lay in the development of an alternative to Humes metaphysics. This alternative would have real causal powers at its centre. Molnar set about developing a thorough account of powers that might persuade those who remained, perhaps unknowingly, in the grip of Humean assumptions. He succeeded in producing something both highly focused and at the same time wideranging. He showed both that the notion of a power was central and that it could serve to dispel a number of longstanding philosophical problems. Molnars account of powers is as realist as any that has so far appeared. He shows that dispositions are as real as any other properties. Specifically, they do not depend for their existence on their manifestations. Nevertheless, they are directed towards such manifestations. Molnar thus appropriates the notion of intentionality, from Brentano, and argues that it is the essential characteristic of powers. He offers a persuasive case for there being some basic and ungrounded powers, thus ruling out the reducibility of the dispositional to the nondispositional. However, he does allow that there are nonpower properties as well as power properties. In this respect, his final position is dualistic. This is contemporary metaphysics of the highest quality. It is a work that was almost complete when its author died. It has been edited for publication by another specialist in the subject, Stephen Mumford, who has also provided an introduction that will allow nonspecialists to become acquainted with the issues. David Armstrong, one of the greatest living metaphysicians and personal friend of George Molnar, has provided a Foreword. Author: Molnar, George/ Mumford, Stephen/ Armstrong, D. M. Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 252 Publication Date: 2006/12/01 Language: English Dimensions: 8.50 x 5.50 x 0.70 inches |

Fiction and Metaphysics $70.1 This challenging study places fiction squarely at the center of the discussion of metaphysics. Philosophers have traditionally treated fiction as involving a set of narrow problems in logic or the philosophy of language. By contrast Amie Thomasson argues that fiction has farreaching implications for central problems of metaphysics. The book develops an artifactual theory of fiction, whereby fictional characters are abstract artifacts as ordinary as laws or symphonies or works of literature. In taking seriously the work of literary scholars and in citing a wide range of literary examples, this book will interest not only philosophers concerned with metaphysics and the philosophy of language, but also those in literary theory interested in these foundational issues. Will and World: A Study in Metaphysics $301.86 Beneath metaphysical problems there often lies a conflict between what we want to be true and what we believe to be true. Nathan provides a general account of the resolution of this conflict as a philosophical objective, showing that there are ways of thinking it through systematically with a view to resolving or alleviating it. The author also studies in detail a set of interrelated conflicts about the freedom and the reality of the will. He shows how difficult it is to find a freedom either of decision or of action which is both an object of reflective desire and an object of rational belief. He also examines conflicts about volition as such, contending that the veridicality of volitional experience is no less easy to doubt than the veridicality of our experience of colors. In this context, arguments emerge for a voluntarist theory of the self. Nathans important book will be essential reading for all philosophers interested in free will, volition, the self, and the methodology of metaphysics. Author: Nathan, N. M. L. Metaphysics: Its Structure and Function $60.54 This is an ambitious and substantial study of metaphysics: its nature and inescapability. Professor K rners method may be described as philosophical anthropology, and aims to arrive at a characterisation of the metaphysical beliefs with which we (have to) operate. Professor K rner begins by describing how the categorical framework of a persons metaphysical beliefs may be embedded in more ordinary beliefs and practical attitudes to the world. He illustrates the variety of such frameworks and describes their role, going on to explain how they may be modified by argument and reflection. This is an independent inquiry, but also the culmination of a series of Professor K rners earlier works. The writing is extremely clear and the material sensitively controlled, revealing great learning and many suggestive insights and comparisons. It presents overall a comprehensive and carefully thoughtout account of metaphysics. Author: Korner, Stephan/ K. Rner, Stephan Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 252 Publication Date: 1986/05/29 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.57 inches |

First Philosophy: Aristotles Concept of Metaphysics. $115.71 In my dissertation First Philosophy: Aristotles Concept of Metaphysics, I examine Aristotles idea of metaphysics from two distinct points of view, first as a peculiar human habit and activity and second as an objective scientific discipline. The first part of the dissertation is devoted to an examination of the theoretical life and the nature of contemplation as an exercise of the human intellect. I argue that metaphysics consists primarily in the activity of contemplation, the consideration of truth and reality, and that human happiness for Aristotle lies in a life devoted to such activity. Moreover, I argue that this conception of the superiority of the theoretical life is not at odds with the active life of virtue but rather includes the latter as an integral element. In the second part of the dissertation I argue that first philosophy, or the study of being as such, which is defined by Aristotle in various ways, is a unified discipline that culminates in the study of the highest causes of being, or what Aristotle calls theology. I show how the Metaphysics presents a coherent, unified and harmonious account of the causal, ontological, and theological components of first philosophy and that this discipline has as its ultimate aim the contemplation of the supreme causes of being. The first part of my dissertation brings to light an unnoticed but significant dimension of first philosophy, while the second part establishes the importance, indeed centrality, of theology to metaphysics, which is increasingly ignored.
