A question about “Manghihilot”/Spiritual healers?

I’m pretty sure some of you are aware of the “manghihilots” and other healers in P.I….From what I remember back then was they would recite a prayer(s) in a different language before healing their patient…My question is, do any of you guys know what language it is? I’m pretty sure it’s not in Filipino..

also why are there so many healers in P.I.? and how did they develop this type of art? It’s rare…
- I was wondering if this has a connection to Lemuria..
@aimdeep: Yes I am aware that something similar is practiced around the world in places like Brazil, The Americas etc..
@ BornFree: Yes I’ve heard others say it’s in Latin but that’s the thing…how could they learn “Latin” when it’s not really taught in schools and nobody really speaks this language…plus most manghihilots come from rural areas…

Manghihilot is different. Manghihilot is the one who massage a person who has a little twisted bone (PILAY). Though some of Manghihilots also know some spells. The language that they are using is Latin. Some people call them Mang Kepweng (because some of them wear bandana on their head), Spiritual Healers or FAITH healers and Albolario (came from the word Herbolario which came from the word HERBAL). Based in Philippines history, they are the people to whom sick people go to. They know much about herbal medicine that is why some called them Herbolario or Albolario. When the spanish conquerors came to Philippines, they spreaded bad things about Herbolario and made them look evil. They said that Herbolarios are witch and that the Catholic community doesn’t allow anyone to believe in any of those because they said that based on the Bible those who practice witchcraft are from the dark side. They even told everybody that Herbolarios are followers of S@t@n and that their powers came from the dark side. Some say that they only could heal the people that they have healed because those people have a very strong faith that Herbolarios can cure their illness. Some say they are the good witches because they cure people unlike those other witches who harm people. You can line the Herbolarios and other GOOD spell casting witches.

When you visit rural places in Philippines be careful because it’s dangerous if you made someone feel bad especially if it’s a naughty spell casting witch. Though most people don’t believe in those kind of things and they even said it’s just crap like hello.. we are in a modern world already. You know, it is still better to be careful and be nice.

These days, it’s hard to find a real Herbolario. Some are fake and they only pretend that they could heal you so they can get money from you. The practice of herbal medicines have been erased by the early professional doctors before because of their personal reasons that is why most of the knowledge about herbal medicine have not been passed on the generation today and that is why now they are starting all over again in researching about herbal medicines.

I hope this can help. ;)

Although perhaps bestknown for her lightly humorous fantasies and for her collaborations with Anne McCaffrey on the Petaybee series and the Acorna series, Elizabeth Anne Scarborough has also written Healers War, a classic novel of the Vietnam War, enriched with a magical, mystical twist, which won the 1989 Nebula Award for Best Novel of 1988. The Minneapolis Star Tribune called it A brutal and beautiful book. Scarborough herself was a nurse in Vietnam during the war and she draws on her own personal experiences to create the central character, Lt. Kitty McCulley. McCulley, a young and inexperienced nurse tossed into a stressful and chaotic situation, is having a difficult time reconciling her duty to help and heal with the indifference and overt racism of some of her colleagues and with the horrendously damaged soldiers and Vietnamese civilians whom she encounters during her service at the China Beach medical facilities. She is unexpectedly helped by the mysterious and inexplicable properties of an amulet, given to her by one of her patients, an elderly, dying Vietnamese holy man, which allows her to see other peoples auras and to understand more about them as a result. This eventually leads to a strange, almost surrealistic journey through the jungle, accompanied by a onelegged boy and a battleseasoned but crazed soldier and, by the end of the journey, McCulley has found herself and a way to live and survive through the madness and destruction.
