christians how do you view the practice of meditation and yoga?

im just curious to see what some of you think about meditation and yoga. i mean do you view it as something that is a bad thing to do or something that can be practiced without crossing religious lines?

do you think a person can meditate without practicing buddhism or a person doing yoga without practicing hinduism? do you view it as an exercise of the body and/ or mind or a sort of exercise of the soul?

Scripture tells us to “Be still, and know that I am God” and says that those who meditate on the laws of God, and who are always thinking of ways to follow God, are full of joy – likened to trees along a river bank, bearing luscious fruit each season without fail. (Ps 1,2 paraphrased). Scripture forbids the practice of divination and witchcraft (which I liken to some of the “manifestation” and “intention” psychology that is out there, along with being actively engaged in contacting the spirit world, worshiping nature instead of its creator and practicing spells of power, etc.) And, of course, God doesn’t want us chasing after other idols, be their spiritual entities. They are there, and people encounter them, sometimes, when they go into deep states of meditation. However friendly they may appear, according to God, we should not be messing about with them. Satan’s goal is to destroy us, or to distract us from God so that we end up destroying ourselves and others…and knows as well as we do that you can attract more flies with honey than vinegar.

In Eastern religions, meditation is a quieting of the mind, but they can be focusing on just about anything – or nothing. They experience a clearing of the mind and a healthier body as a result.
A Christian who meditates on the word of God and the good things God has done in his life will probably benefit even more if he takes to time to simply offer all he has (emptying himself in his relationship to God) because God longs to make us who we were designed to be, and to give us all we need for that. God designed us this way, but longs for relationship with us…not for us to use that gift of stillness following a counterfeit “light,” however real it may seem.

Same thing with Yoga, though most yoga that is available is hatha yoga and focuses more on positions. Still, many classes have students do the “om” chant – it is a fairly quick means into a transcendent meditation state…and the purpose is, forgive my flippancy, a sort of universal mind meld. In this alpha state, we are incredibly vulnerable to whatever messages that come to us. Tv actually turns on alpha state in part of our brain, which makes advertising so powerful. Scripture does warn against chanting, repetitive prayers. Our focus should be on God, not achieving a vulnerable spiritual state.

According to Scripture, we live in times of spiritual warfare, and need to be mindful. On the other hand, the Indians and Chinese have a long tradition of a deep understanding of the human body, and a wise Christian can learn much from that.
